If you need help now
Found an injured animal or bird?
The right first move is not the same for the two. A bird is contained by whoever finds it; an injured dog or cat is reported and left to a trained team. Start with the one in front of you.
A dog, cat or street animal
Do not pick it up. Reporting well is worth far more than handling badly.
- Make the spot safe from traffic first, then keep everyone back.
- Note what you can see from a metre away — bleeding, back legs, breathing.
- Call with a live location pin and say what animal it is.
- No food, no water, and never paracetamol — it is lethal to cats.
A bird
Contain it yourself. Shock kills more rescued birds than the original wound.
- A cardboard box with air holes and a soft cloth — never a wire cage.
- Close the lid and keep it dark, quiet, warm and away from pets.
- Do not offer food or water; a bird in shock can inhale liquid.
- Call the helpline while the bird settles in the box.

What to do, situation by situation
Written for the person standing over the animal right now — no jargon, no diagnosis, just what actually helps.
For rescue organisations
A rescue call becomes a tracked case
Every NGO gets its own space, its own volunteers and its own WhatsApp device. Nothing is shared between organisations.
Register a case in seconds
Log a rescue from the dashboard, from the public link, or straight from WhatsApp. Repeat callers get their previous address filled in automatically.
Auto-dispatch on WhatsApp
The new case lands in your team group the moment it is saved, and the caller gets an immediate acknowledgement.
Statuses you define
Build your own case statuses, each with the message the caller receives when the case reaches it.
Volunteers and permissions
Add volunteers with per-person permissions, assign them to cases, and let them log in with phone and password.
Reports and exports
Area-by-species and area-by-status breakdowns, volunteer leaderboards and CSV export.
Your data stays yours
Cases, volunteers and messages are scoped to your NGO. Rescue photos are relayed to WhatsApp and never stored.
Questions
Frequently asked
I have found an injured animal. What should I do right now?
Do not pick it up. Make the spot safe from traffic, keep people and pets back, and call an animal rescue helpline with your exact location — pain makes any animal bite, and an untrained lift can worsen a spinal injury. Give no food, water or painkillers, keep it warm and in sight, and wait for a trained team.
Where can I find an animal rescue helpline number?
Jinseva publishes a free directory of 32 animal and bird rescue contacts across 19 areas of Mumbai and its suburbs, at jinseva.in/helpline. Search your area, call or WhatsApp the local volunteer, and say at the start what animal it is — not every volunteer handles every species.
Can I give an injured dog or cat a painkiller?
No. Paracetamol is lethal to cats even in a single small dose, and ibuprofen and aspirin are dangerous to dogs. An animal that may need emergency surgery also must not be given food or water, because anything in the stomach makes anaesthesia far riskier.
I have found an injured bird. What should I do right now?
Cover the bird with a cloth, lift it gently with both wings held against its body, and place it in a ventilated cardboard box lined with soft fabric. Keep the box closed, dark, quiet and away from pets. Do not give food or water. Then call a bird rescue helpline immediately.

What is Jinseva?
Jinseva is case-management software for animal and bird rescue organisations. Each NGO gets its own dashboard, volunteer roster and WhatsApp automation, so a rescue call becomes a tracked case that reaches the right responder and is followed through to closure.
Is the rescue helpline directory free to use?
Yes. The helpline directory is published free for the public and needs no login or registration. The numbers listed belong to the rescue groups and volunteers who publish them.
Can any rescue NGO use Jinseva?
Yes. Any animal or bird rescue organisation can register, and after approval it runs on its own URL with its own cases, volunteers, statuses and WhatsApp device. Registration is at jinseva.in/register.
